What makes Zell am See (Schmittenhöhe) different
Zell am See is a town on the shore of the Zeller See lake, and the skiing sits right above it, on the Schmittenhöhe — a mountain that rises straight from the waterfront to about 2,000 m. That is where the postcard view comes from: the frozen lake, the town roofs, and the snowy ridge of the Hohe Tauern with the Grossglockner glacier behind. You reach the slopes from the centre, not from a car park in the woods — the town and the lift are one.
The Schmittenhöhe itself has 28 lifts and a dense web of runs, most of them blue and red, with a handful of blacks. This is a mountain for families and for anyone who would rather cover distance than fight the gradient. From the ridge you look out over dozens of three-thousand-metre peaks, and the descents drop through wide forest cuts all the way down to the lake.
The Schmittenhöhe is fairly low, though, and the town lies at its foot at around 750 m, so valley snow can be unreliable. The answer is the ticket: the Ski ALPIN CARD covers, besides the Schmittenhöhe, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier in Kaprun, where you ski to nearly 3,000 m and the season holds into spring. The weather model gives the Schmitten itself plenty of snow — around 138 cm in December, 135 in January — but it is the glacier next door that is the snow guarantee here, not the mountain above the town.
The pass is that Ski ALPIN CARD: one card for the Schmittenhöhe, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier and the whole Skicircus Saalbach — the 6-day adult costs €440 in the 2026/27 main season (the Zell am See-Kaprun pricelist, checked August 2026, fixed). Check prices with the operator before you travel, as they change each season. The drive from Poland is short by Alpine standards and runs through Czechia and Salzburg, with no Brenner — about 660 km from Wałbrzych, 738 from Wrocław, 770 from Katowice, 846 from Kraków.
