Runs by difficulty

  • blue 16.9 km

This is snowfall, not snow depth on the slope: it says how much usually falls in a given month, not how much lies there. The measuring point sits close to the valley floor, so higher up it snows more.

Places to stay by the lift

Distance is measured in a straight line to the base station of the nearest lift. No booking site publishes that number — it comes from matching accommodation against lift geometry.

  • 8 within 300 m
  • 100 within 1 km
  • 333 places in the valley

The closest one stands 216 m from a lift.

What makes Kaprun (Kitzsteinhorn) different

Kaprun is Zell am See's neighbour, but the skiing here is a different kind: above the village rises the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, the only one in the region and one of the few in Austria you can ski to nearly 3,000 m. It is what lets the season start in autumn, while the grassy slopes lower down are still green, and hold on well into spring. If you are after snow certainty in this corner of the Alps, this is where it comes from.

From the village of Kaprun you reach the glacier without a car: the 3K cable car links the family Maiskogel mountain, the mid-station at Langwiedboden and the upper Kitzsteinhorn into a single run. Up top the pistes spread across a glacier plateau — more wide, gentle descents than steep pitches, so it is terrain where families and skiers still finding their feet feel safe. From the summit you look out over the ridges of the Hohe Tauern and the Grossglockner.

This is the snowiest place in the whole set. The weather model gives around 143 cm in December, 130 in January, and still over 80 even in April — a glacier gathers and holds snow in a way no lower mountain can. That is the reason to aim for Kaprun at the start or the end of the season, when elsewhere the snow has not yet arrived or has already gone.

The pass is the same Ski ALPIN CARD as at Zell am See — one card for the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, the Schmittenhöhe and the whole Skicircus Saalbach; the 6-day adult costs €440 in the 2026/27 main season (the Zell am See-Kaprun pricelist, checked August 2026, fixed). Outside the full season the glacier also sells its own ticket. Check prices with the operator before you travel, as they change each season. The drive from Poland is short by Alpine standards, through Czechia and Salzburg with no Brenner — about 683 km from Wałbrzych, 761 from Wrocław, 794 from Katowice, 869 from Kraków.
