Is Obergurgl-Hochgurgl worth it?
Obergurgl-Hochgurgl lies at the very end of the Ötztal valley in Tyrol, and Obergurgl is one of the highest villages in the Alps -- its church stands at nearly 1,900 m. That altitude is the resort's main asset: snow is all but certain here from early winter, hence its nickname, the "diamond of the Alps".
In our measurement from OpenStreetMap it comes to about 69 km of pistes, on two sectors joined by gondola -- Obergurgl and the higher Hochgurgl. The runs are mostly easy and intermediate, wide, without the crowds typical of lower-lying resorts.
The upper lift ends reach above 3,000 m and the villages sit near 1,800-1,900 m, so the whole area is high and snowy. The season usually runs from November to April, longer than in lower resorts.
