Is Chamonix-Mont-Blanc worth it?

Chamonix lies in Haute-Savoie, in a valley set directly below Mont Blanc -- the highest peak in the Alps. It is the cradle of alpinism and the site of the first Winter Olympics in 1924. The cable car to the Aiguille du Midi climbs to nearly 3,800 m, the start of the famous Vallée Blanche glacier descent.

In our measurement from OpenStreetMap it comes to about 56 km of marked pistes, but Chamonix is not one continuous slope -- it is several separate sectors along the valley (Grands Montets, Brévent-Flégère, Les Houches), and its real fame rests on the high-mountain terrain off the pistes.

The runs reach high into the glacier country of the massif, so the snow holds long, and the skiing tends to suit the experienced. The season usually runs from December to April, longer up high.

The Mont-Blanc Unlimited pass price is dynamic -- the resort sets it by day and by how far ahead you buy, cheaper in advance, so we give no single figure; check it with the operator as you book.
