Is Silvretta Montafon worth it?

Silvretta Montafon is the largest ski area in Vorarlberg, Austria's westernmost state. It lies in the Montafon valley and takes its name from the Silvretta massif at its head. Two big sectors -- Hochjoch above Schruns and Nova above Gaschurn -- are joined on one ticket.

In our measurement from OpenStreetMap it comes to about 157 km of pistes, with a good share of hard runs among them -- more than the Austrian "family resort" reputation would suggest. Alongside the broad, gentle pistes there are steep faces and terrain for confident skiers.

The valley floor sits at around 695 m and the lifts climb to nearly 2,280 m, so the vertical is large and some runs drop all the way to the village. The season usually runs from December to April.

The lift-pass price at Silvretta Montafon is dynamic -- the resort sets it by day and by how far ahead you buy, cheaper in advance, so we give no single figure; check it with the operator as you book. The drive from Poland is, per OpenStreetMap, about 937 km from Wrocław, 1,089 from Katowice and 1,165 from Kraków -- one of the shorter in this set.
