What makes Livigno different
The valley floor sits at 1,816 m, higher than the summit of any Polish resort. Most of what follows comes out of that one number: November and December each bring about 120 cm of snow on average — more than January or February — and the lowest lift station stands at 1,878 m. The season starts early here, and that is usually the reason somebody drives a thousand kilometres to reach it.
The runs sit on both sides of the valley. Mottolino to the east, Carosello 3000 and Costaccia to the west; one pass covers all three and a ski bus runs between them. The difficulty split is even — 73 km of red against 42 km of blue and 23 km of black — so the valley works both after a first season and once wide boulevards have stopped being enough.
Livigno is a duty-free zone, and that is a budget line rather than a piece of trivia. Fuel, alcohol and equipment cost noticeably less here than on the other side of the border, and a customs post with per-person limits stands on the way out of the valley.
Getting there is the hard part. The last stretch runs either through the Munt la Schera tunnel on the Swiss side — 3.4 km, single-lane with shuttle traffic, entry roughly every 20 minutes and closed overnight — or over the Foscagno pass at 2,291 m, open year-round and toll-free. In winter both are mountain roads, so winter tyres and chains in the boot are not a matter of taste.
