Is Grindelwald – Wengen (Jungfrau) worth it?
Grindelwald and Wengen lie at the foot of the Eiger, below its famous north face, in the Jungfrau region of the Bernese Oberland. Wengen is car-free — you reach it by cog railway — and above both towns runs the course of the most famous World Cup downhill, the Lauberhorn, the longest on the calendar. This is skiing in scenery that is itself the reason to come.
In our measurement from OpenStreetMap it comes to about 127 km of pistes, split evenly between easy and intermediate with a sensible amount of harder terrain. The skiing is varied, but the core is long, pleasant descents with views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
The lift climbs to around 2,400 m and the lower stations sit at around 1,275 m, so the vertical is large. The snow up high holds well; the season usually runs from December to April.
The Jungfrau region ski pass is sold dynamically — the price depends on the date and how early you buy, so no single figure would be true. The prices are in Swiss francs and we do not convert them; check with the operator before you travel. The drive from Poland: about 1,183 km from Wrocław, 1,344 from Katowice, 1,419 from Kraków.
